Works24 Pieces
Year2024–2026

These images begin as photographs: personal snapshots, archival documents, stock imagery, found moments. Through digital transformation they become something else entirely. The source material is real. What emerges from it is something harder to name.

The working method is one of collision and displacement. Personal memory meets cultural history; nostalgia meets absurdity; ordinary situations are pushed just far enough out of alignment that their meanings begin to shift. Humor, unease and ambiguity often occupy the same image.

No image here is what it first appears to be. That gap between appearance and reality is where the work lives.

Philip Keppel

Philip Keppel is a post-photographic artist working between Los Angeles and Portugal's Algarve region. His work begins with photography, archival imagery, public-domain material and licensed visual sources, which he transforms through digital manipulation, compositing, repetition and recontextualization.

Keppel draws on personal memory, cultural history, nostalgia, absurdity and everyday observation, creating images in which familiar situations become subtly or dramatically displaced. Humor frequently sits beside unease, while recognizable imagery is stripped of its original certainty.

Rather than prescribe a narrative, Keppel leaves interpretation deliberately open. The resulting works occupy the unstable territory between photograph, memory and invention.
