Artist Statement

These images begin as photographs — personal snapshots, archival documents, stock imagery, found moments. Through digital transformation they become something else entirely. The source material is real. What emerges from it is something harder to name.

The working method is deliberate collision. Personal memory meets historical record. The domestic meets the monumental. The ordinary is forced into conversation with the extraordinary until something unexpected becomes visible.

The result is a body of work about what gets passed forward — joy, labor, history, grief, obliviousness, hope, broken things, beautiful things, things that refuse to stay buried. About what we hand to each other across time without always meaning to.

No image here is what it first appears to be. That gap between appearance and reality is where the work lives.

Philip Keppel

Philip Keppel is a contemporary artist working between Los Angeles and Portugal's Algarve region. His post-photographic practice draws from original photography, historical imagery, public-domain sources, and licensed stock photography, transforming familiar visual material through digital manipulation, compositing, repetition, and recontextualization.

Having lived and worked across diverse regions of the United States before establishing roots in Southern California and Portugal, Keppel developed an enduring interest in the ways environment, memory, and culture shape perception. His work reflects this perspective, exploring movement, labor, identity, nostalgia, and contemporary visual culture through images that balance the recognizable and the unexpected.

Rather than documenting reality, Keppel reinterprets it. Personal memories, historical imagery, labor, technology, nostalgia, and everyday observations are transformed into visual narratives that resist fixed interpretation. Through symmetry, ambiguity, irony, and transformation, familiar images are displaced from their original contexts and recombined into open-ended works that invite viewers to participate in the process of meaning-making.

Keppel has produced an extensive body of work spanning more than 500 pieces and continues to explore the evolving possibilities of post-photographic image making.
